What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot

You’ve booked your family photoshoot—awesome! Now comes the big question: What on earth are we all going to wear? Don’t stress, I’ve got you. As a Sydney family photographer (and parent myself), I know how overwhelming it can feel trying to coordinate everyone’s outfits without ending up too “matchy-matchy” or clashing like a rainbow exploded.

The good news? With a little planning (and these handy tips), you can pull together family photoshoot clothes that feel authentic, look amazing, and let your family’s connection shine.

1. Keep it Simple and Timeless

When it comes to family photos, less is more. Stick to neutral or earthy tones like white, cream, beige, olive, navy, or soft pastels. These colours photograph beautifully and won’t date in a few years’ time. Avoid logos, graphics, and busy patterns—these can distract from what really matters: you and your family.

👉 Pro tip: Lay everyone’s outfits out together on the bed to see how the colours and textures work as a group. Then text the photos to me and I can give you some guidance.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing jeans and a white T-shirt! Instead, aim for colours and tones that complement each other without being identical. Think: mum in a soft floral dress, dad in a solid neutral shirt, kids in coordinating shades with simple textures.

This approach keeps things cohesive, while still letting everyone’s personality shine through.

3. Prioritise Comfort

A family photoshoot with Delight Images is relaxed, playful, and full of movement—so wear clothes that let you move, sit on the ground, cuddle, and run around with your kids. If you feel comfortable, you’ll look confident (and you’ll have a way better time).

If you’re constantly adjusting a strap or sucking in because of tight pants, it’s going to show in your photos. Choose clothes that make you feel like you.

4. Layers & Textures Add Depth

For the cooler months, a cosy cardigan, linen shirt, denim jacket, or knitted jumper can add beautiful texture and interest to your photos without overpowering the image. Layers also give us flexibility to mix things up throughout the shoot—jacket on, jacket off etc.

5. What About the Kids?

Kids’ clothes can be fun, but keep them simple. Avoid giant cartoon characters or neon colours (they can throw off skin tones in photos). Choose soft fabrics that don’t itch or scratch—if they’re comfy, they’re happier, which means more natural smiles.

A little dress with bloomers, shorts with braces, a knitted romper, or a simple button-up shirt with rolled sleeves are all great options. Bare feet are also welcome (and often adorable) if we’re shooting outdoors or at home. For older kids, a plain t-shirt and fitted jeans, or a simple dress work perfectly (and are an easier sell for teenagers).

6. Shoes Matter Too

Shoes can easily be forgotten, but they will show up in some photos! Opt for simple footwear like neutral sandals, boots, or canvas sneakers. Avoid bright sports shoes or anything too chunky unless it really suits your vibe.

If we’re shooting at the beach, barefoot is the way to go.

7. Think About Your Home

A lot of families display their photos as wall art or albums. Have a think about where your photos will live—if your home is filled with soft tones and natural textures, bold neon outfits might not sit well in a big frame on the wall. Choosing a palette that fits with your home decor ensures your images feel right at home, too.

8. Don’t Forget the Little Extras

Want to bring something special to your shoot? I love when families incorporate meaningful family photoshoot props like a favourite blanket, a storybook, or a well-loved teddy. Just let me know ahead of time so we can work it in naturally.

But remember—less is more! Props should add meaning, not distract from your connection.

Final Thoughts

At Delight Images, my goal is to capture you being you—those big laughs, cheeky grins, warm hugs, and quiet moments in between. What you wear should enhance that, not overshadow it.

So keep it comfy, coordinated, and true to your family’s style. And if you’re stuck, text me some outfit options—I’m more than happy to help!
